If you're an entrepreneur, you may have been wondering if you really need a Facebook page to build your business.
Some people are confused between the terms Facebook “page” and Facebook “profile”. A Facebook page is a public profile that your audience “likes”. It is different from your Facebook profile, where you control the privacy settings and may add up to 5000 friends and allow unlimited “followers” to subscribe to your public content.
Recently, I've noticed a few marketing coaches recommending people promote their business from their personal profile rather than starting a business page. I believe this is very bad advice. Here are my top five reasons why every entrepreneur needs a Facebook business page.
1. Using your personal profile primarily for business violates Facebook's Terms of Service.
I know several entrepreneurs who have had their personal Facebook profiles shut down without warning because they were using them for business purposes. I don't imagine it's too much fun to start over, especially when you have thousands of friends and followers. One of my Facebook friends logged in one day to discover that her personal profile had been converted to a business page with zero fans. She had lost her 5000 friends and all of her followers. Apparently someone had reported her profile because they didn't like her frequent business posts. How would your business be affected if that happened to you?
It's perfectly fine to promote your business occasionally on your personal profile. I recommend keeping business posts to 10% of your overall posts, especially if you are in network marketing or direct sales. Your friends and family will appreciate this change, I promise. I know mine did, when I learned how to brand myself and market professionally.
2. You can grow your Facebook page using ads and custom apps.
You can't create Facebook ads using the Power Editor or Ads Manager unless you have a Facebook page. Facebook ads and apps are a very powerful way to leverage your content and promotions to grow your business. You may run ads to accomplish such goals as growing your page likes, promoting sponsored posts, or sending people to your website. Personally, I have made thousands by using Facebook ads.
3. You have access to powerful tracking data on a Facebook page.
With a Facebook page, you can determine your audience demographics and track your results using free tools that are available. Use the audience insights tool to find out where your fans live, what other pages they like, and where they are likely to hang out. Evaluate how well your posts perform by comparing the number of views to the number of engaged fans. Use the data to strategically target your ads, lower the cost of your ads, and adjust your content to improve engagement.
4. Facebook pages are shown in Google searches.
The only time I've seen personal Facebook profiles show as a result in a Google search is when I've searched for a person by name. If someone is searching for a product or service that you offer, your personal profile will never show in the results, but your business page might. If you have posted some great videos or content on your Facebook business page, and someone is searching using your keywords, they may find your Facebook page in their search results. Learn some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies and your Facebook page could become a huge asset.
5. Facebook pages are more professional for business use.
It simply looks more professional when you market on a business page rather than your personal profile. You don't have to worry about annoying your friends and family, because your Facebook page's audience is comprised of people who willingly liked your page and want to see your posts. Many of your fans will find you organically as others share and/or engage with your content. These are people that you may not have otherwise met and who are not your Facebook friends.
As your business grows, you may want to hire a part time VA (Virtual Assistant) to help you manage your page. With a Facebook page, you can add other administrators to your page without giving them access to your personal profile.

How to Take Your Facebook Marketing to the Next Level
It's fine to share the content from other people and businesses in your niche, but if you really want to accelerate your success, you will want to start creating your own content and branding yourself. This is called attraction marketing. One of the best ways to grow your business is to share content from your own website on your Facebook page. When your fans click on the link in your post to read your content, they will be taken to your website. This will help you to convert some of your Facebook fans to your email list, which is very important.
Growing your email list should be near the top of every entrepreneur's list of priorities. It allows you to communicate with people who have subscribed and who want to hear from you – without having to pay for ads. It also protects your connections, which is super important. When you have a social media profile on a platform such as Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, you are giving complete control to the platform. If they decide to suspend your account, there is not too much you can do. You will lose all your connections and your content. When you own your own domain and website, however, you are in complete control of your content and list of subscribers.
